Mad About CALS and KALS

With CAL's (and KAL's) cropping up weekly from all our favourite brands, we thought we'd put together a little guide to go alongside so you can see why these fantastic projects really are the ideal way to perfect your skills, create something beautiful and meet some friends on the journey
WHAT IS A CAL / KAL?
A CAL is an acronym for Crochet Along (KAL = Knit Along). It is a collective name of a project that is being created at the same time and the same pace by a group of people. These can be hosted, in blogs, Facebook groups or forums - anywhere where a bunch of people can get together (online or otherwise!) and bond over a particular pattern

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Many CAL's/KAL's are released in instalments with an intended launch date - this allows crafter's to buy the stock required for the design, ask any questions and get ready before the first post is added. While many crafter's enjoy to create the project at the same pace as the parts are released, it also enables other crocheters or knitters to join in at times that are suitable to them

WHAT DO I NEED?
Items vary for each CAL/KAL, some designers give you basic instructions such as yarn weight, etc. so you can choose your own yarn and colourways and others will recommend the exact products they've used. Some kits will be readily available to buy as a whole or you might even find many variants for the same project

DO I NEED TO BE A SKILLED KNITTER OR CROCHETER?
CAL's/KAL's vary in skill levels but this is usually stated in the initial release post. Many encourage skills of all levels to get involved and the best part is, as they are so social, there will always be people on hand to help guide you should you get stuck and allows you to post progress pictures

DO I NEED TO FINISH IT WHEN EVERYONE ELSE DOES?
Of course not! CAL's/KAL's are designed to enable you to finish in your own time. Many are still available to download long after the final instalment is released and don't forget to check out the blogs, groups and forums too - sometimes you'll find friendships have formed and it has become it's own little online community

WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS ARE THEY?
Many CAL/KAL projects tend to be on the larger side, such as blankets, throws and shawls, however, it can also be a gradual collection of a full set, so one pattern from full collective is released each week. Over the last couple of years, Deramores have released two CAL's/KAL's - a crochet blanket and a knitted Dinosaur Collection (now available as a full kit!)
